Nails of New York: Fran Hickman

Tell us about your nail look from The Interior Design Collection.

The look I chose was inspired by the reception desk. It has a silver base and three layers of metallic foils — a mirrored silver, a rose gold and an amazing transparent iridescent one. It feels quite space age but works with everything! I love it.

What's your earliest or most nostalgic nail memory?

Raiding my mum’s dressing table for make up and finding her deep red Chanel polish.

What was your inspiration for the design of our Upper East Side studio?

Following Paintbox, our aim was to cutely juxtapose unexpected shades of colour in a manner both experimental and restrained. Drawing from Josef Albers’ Interaction of Colour, we determined to convey the drama and tension of colour combining in a complimentary palette of materials and uncommon colours. Playing with the chosen materials, and the colours they contain, the intention was to lift the spirits, stimulate the senses and instill serenity.

Do you have any other creative outlets in addition to design?

Having made a partial move to the country, I now have a garden and am growing many sweet peas, have sewn wild flowers, and am cultivating a small vegetable patch.

How do you press reset and relax?

I am very British in that I love a bath. If I’m at home, my Sunday mornings are spent in a long and lazy bath, scented with a Dr Harris & Co. bath oil, a cup of coffee on hand, and Radio 4 for company.

Holy grail beauty products or self-care habits?

For skincare, Dr Barbara Sturm, and I’ve just discovered the Korean brand, Sulwhasoo. I also wear Heliocare Colour Sun Touch SPF 50 every day.

What are your go-to spots when you visit NYC?

Neil Grupp for a haircut and Beauty Supply’s Emaly B for colour.
