Hearts on Fire

November 5, 2014

We've completely fallen in love with metallic foils for fall. This nail accessory instantly elevates even single-color manicures, lending textural fire to your fingertips without the bling of glitter or the dated feel of frost. And they can be used for everything from minimal, reflective touches to flashy eye-catching designs in both polish and gel.

There are many ways to wear foils and below are this season's metallic MVPs from our Fall / Winter collection. The options are endless, but we've put together some tips on choosing the foil look that's right for your personal style.

Gold-leaf look: Different Strokes. For a glamorous look, opt for a classic red as your base. We love RGB Scarlet.

• Happy-Go-Lucky - Think of foils as your new best friend. Colorful foil options abound. One of our favorites is the foil we offer that resembles an oil slick. This every-color-of-the-rainbow option has been an enduring favorite at Paintbox and has become one of our signature looks.

• Classic Glamour - We never get tired of the combination of gold and red. Choose your favorite red gel or polish and stick to yellow gold foil accents for a timeless look.

• Modern Minimalism - Even the manicure minimalist can wear foil. Rather than colorful foils, opt for something that matches the jewelry you usually wear. We're currently crushing on the combo of Gelish Skinny Vanilla Latte (a perfect nude—polish wearers, ask for Zoya Cho) with gold and bronze foils. The pairing is gorgeous and goes with everything.

• Edgy Yet Elegant - Consider black or another very dark color for your base color. Just about any color of foil looks great against an inky backdrop and the contrast makes foils really stand out.

Urban Jungle: your choice of foil over your choice of polish or gel comes together for an übermetallic look. Essie Good as Gold (seen here) is the perfect base for foil layering.

“ Foils instantly elevate even single-color manicures, adding textural fire to fingertips. “

Loose foil imitates gold leaf in Gilt Group. For this look, we used Deborah Lippmann's rich metallic 12th Street Rag and yellow gold foil.

“ Even the manicure minimalist can wear foil. Rather than colorful foils, opt for something that matches the jewelry you usually wear. “

Urban Jungle: this multi-color foil resembling an oil slick is a Paintbox favorite. Use this foil over any color base. Our current favorite pairing is with Estée Lauder's Blue Blood lacquer.

Hot Shot: one of our most popular looks this season. Your choice of foil(s) is applied at the moon of the nail over your choice of polish. Glossy black, like NARS Back Room, is the perfect choice for standout look.
