Nails of New York: Brooke Monahan
How did you pick your manicure and color combo?
A neutral nail can oftentimes feel unexciting, but this sand and pop-of-glitter combo was a perfect example of why that doesn’t have to be the case!
In one word, how does your manicure make you feel?
Energized.
Any funny, nostalgic nail moments or what’s your earliest nail memory?
My mom never let us wear nontraditional colors, so the first time I was allowed to stray outside a traditional pink or red was a blue glitter nail polish. At the time I thought it was the biggest deal ever.
What’s your approach to personal style?
I have always loved fashion and how it allows you to express your personality. I wore a uniform growing up so the weekends were my time to push the boundaries and be creative with my own style. I love combining feminine elements with a bit of an industrial feel, like wearing a sundress with moto boots or girly sweaters with leather shorts.
How does color play a role in your life?
I think everyone can agree that certain colors evoke certain feelings. I am a big believer in that your outfit can be a reflection of how you feel. For me, I love how wearing bright colors makes me feel as energized as they look. Most people in my life even identify me with a lot of my favorite colors I wear, like pinks, purples, and other pastels. I take it as a compliment when people refer to outfits as “being so me.”
When do you get your best ideas and from where do you draw inspiration?
Living in NYC, so much of my inspiration comes from living in such a vibrant city. I also am fortunate enough to work in an office with a lot of amazingly stylish and creative people, so every day at work I learn something new.
Three things you’re into right now?
Golden Goose sneakers, the podcast “How I Built This” from NPR, and Body by Simone fitness classes.
How do you press reset and relax?
NYC is rarely relaxing, so I use exercise as a time to escape from the pace of the city. I love trying new classes and having that time to myself.
