Nails of New York: Dr. Marnie Nussbaum

How did you choose your nail look?

My style is typically classic with a tiny pop of surprise. I love elegant, timeless pieces but adding my own twist on them. Pink is my absolute favorite color (that hasn't changed since I was a little girl) as it translates into pure happiness in my brain. Therefore, pale pink on all nails with a pop of rose gold on each ring finger was the perfect choice for me! It allows me to go to work and look professional but then feel like I can go out later with gorgeous, fun nails!

Tell us about your dermatology practice and how you started it.

Dermatology was an easy choice for me. I’ve been fascinated by the skin since I was very young when my grandfather died of melanoma. The skin is the largest organ of the body and is truly a window into what’s going on inside. I love that I can do full-body skin examinations on people of all ages and stop skin cancer in its tracks while also combining my love of beauty by doing aesthetics such as injectables, lasers, and peels as well as body contouring. I decided to open my own business so that I could build a practice that was unique, individualized, and based in my own ideology. I think the best way to approach your dreams is one day at a time. I truly believe anyone can make their dreams come true...it just takes hard work, resilience, persistence, and fortitude. Each day is a gift, and we all have to try and make the most of it.

What’s your favorite part about your job?

There are many things I love about my job but a few things certainly stand out. First and foremost, I absolutely love meeting inspirational, amazing women each and every day and listening to everyone's history, dreams, and future. I feel honored and privileged to have such close relationships with my patients; to celebrate weddings and births but also to go through loss and grief together as well. I love that I can combine my love of science and beauty while making people feel better about themselves and more confident. Lastly, nothing means more to me than when I hear someone say, "Remember when you found that melanoma 10 years ago? I am so happy you did because now I get to see my grandchild's birth."

How do you take time for yourself and practice self-care?

Self-care is not always easy when you have two children and two offices. However, it is vital to mental health and being a present mom. Nothing makes me happier than to come home and spend the night with my kids doing pajama dance parties, playing basketball, and doing puzzles together. I really try and be in the moment with whatever I am doing, whether it's getting my nails done, being with the kids, or reading a good book at night. I also just started doing pilates twice a week and have been really loving it!

What are your holy grail beauty products?

As a dermatologist, I’m constantly trying and reviewing new beauty products, but I definitely have a few go-to’s. In the winter, my cuticles are extremely dry, especially as I wash my hands all day so I love Paintbox's Cuticle Oil. I could not live without my Trish McAvoy Lash Curling Mascara or my Nars Orgasm lip gloss. Skin wise, yes, I am in love with my very own Glow Pads, which contain glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and lactic acid to ensure a perfect glow (anti-aging and anti-acne) as well as SkinMedica's TNS serum, which is my anti-aging superhero.

What are your go-to spots on the Upper East Side?

I have been living on the UES for 20 years and have a lot of personal faves. However, my absolute go-to’s would have to be The Mark Hotel for dinner, Ralph's Coffee at Ralph Lauren, Anita’s Gelato, Central Park, window shopping on Madison Avenue (don't underestimate window shopping for inspiration!), and William Greenberg bakery for the best black and white cookie! Lastly, of course, Paintbox for an amazing, cutting-edge manicure!
